1) PhD position in Creative Design - I (V51.063)
Project: Develop an interactive system to support communicating
implicit design representations.

Description: Creative thinking revolves around two complementary means
of communicating ideas, opinions and intentions: descriptions, that
can be spoken or written, and depictions, such as gestures, drawings
or pictures. Descriptions are especially useful for expressing the
explicit results of our internal reasoning. Descriptions are often
called extrinsic, because their meaning is determined by externally
defined rules of interpretation that we have acquired in the course of
our lives. In a creative process, where meaning is often not yet known
explicitly, some highly relevant aspects may be impossible to describe
adequately. Unlike descriptions, depictions, such as gestures, images
and sketches, are called intrinsic. Their meaning is not determined by
externally agreed interpretation rules, but instead extracted through
largely the same mechanisms of visual perception and cognitive
inspection that we rely on to function in the physical world.
Depictions tend to contain details that are not explicitly intended,
and that should hence be considered implicit.
This project aims to design and develop a mixed reality platform for
supporting industrial designers in recruiting, constructing and
manipulating depictions during creative design, avoiding premature
commitment to descriptions. Current research into design practice in
industry has proposed a number of concepts for interactive tools in
support of different aspects of design e.g., material collection,
browsing, organizing, creating and communicating designs. This project
will build on this research by developing these concepts into
applications and seeking to deploy them in actual design settings,
improving them iteratively based on feedback obtained from designers.

Outcomes: Working prototype of augmented reality environment to
support ideation by teams; experimental validation of the efficacy of
the tool to support creative design processes.

Requirements: The ideal candidate will have expertise in several of
the following areas: virtual or augmented reality software and
hardware, (industrial) design, (qualitative) research methods.
Important aspects to the work, next to idea generation and publishing,
is implementing ideas in software that involves, due to the nature of
the project, ample visuals (such as computer generated graphics,
images, etc.). Establishing the user experiences with developed
prototypes is another key aspect of the project (this aspect is
supported by much expertise in the team).

2) PhD position in Creative Design - II(V51.064)
Project: Investigate creative problem solving process:
cross-disciplinary method diffusion.

Description: The proposed research will examine the diffusion of
methods for creative problem solving in multi-disciplinary fields,
such as interaction design. This subfield is the meeting point for
diverse fields of knowledge where engineering, scientific and design
approaches overlap, complement each other, cross-fertilize and
compete. While the transfer of techniques and methods between
disciplines can potentially increase creativity in support of
innovation is can also be fraught with challenges. Methods applied may
have diverse origins, may be shared between disciplines, or may be
applied differently by individuals subscribing to different
intellectual traditions. This whole phenomenon is described below as
method diffusion.
A systematic investigation of the diffusion of methods aiming to
support innovation can unravel how and why different methods are
applied successfully or misapplied, transformed or improved when they
are adopted by a different discipline and what push-back exists:
adoption from a different discipline can lead to revisiting original
ideas, improving them or rejecting them. Current practice regarding
method diffusion will be documented, flagging areas of opportunity and
pitfalls for practitioners. A (multiple) case study approach will
examine creative processes that were demonstrably successful
contrasting them to cases where a large degree of interdisciplinarity
and methodological innovation did not meet corresponding success.
Interventions to support specific design projects will be organised.
Through an action research approach, the effects of these
interventions will be evaluated.

Outcomes: An analysis of current design practices characterizing
pitfalls and best practice. A roadmap for method diffusion to support
creativity and innovation will be proposed, and experiences from its
application will be reported.

Requirements: Candidates should have an interest and background in the
areas of human computer interaction and interaction design. Special
interest and expertise in qualitative research methods,
ethnography/anthropology are a bonus.

Appointment and Salary

The appointment is for four years. As an employee of the university
you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment
conditions (including excellent sport facilities and child care). The
research in this project must be concluded with writing a PhD thesis.
A salary is offered starting at EUR 2000,- per month (gross) in the
first year and increasing up to EUR 2558,- per month (gross) in the

Post-doctoral Research Fellow position No. 2:
A postdoctoral research fellow is needed at the School of Materials
Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore
to work on a photocatalytic research project. The candidate is
expected to hold a PhD degree with experience either in the
computational chemistry or surface chemistry. For the computational
work, the candidate should be skillful in band structure calculation.
Knowledge in photocatalytic materials and redox reactions will be an
advantage. For the surface chemistry work, the candidate should
ideally have experience in in-situ surface spectroscopies and/or
photo-reactors. Experience with Attenuated Total Reflectance or
Diffuse Reflectance spectroscopy would be an advantage. Initial
appointment is for one year, with possibility of extending for another
one-and-a-half years upon satisfactory progress.

The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs launched the
Eiffel excellence scholarship programme in January 1999 to support
French centres of higher education in their international outreach
initiatives, in a context of mounting competition among developed
countries to attract elite students from overseas. In 2005, the
scheme was extended with the Eiffel Doctorate programme, addressing
high-calibre PhD students.

For greater clarity, the French Ministry of Foreign and European
Affairs is now introducing a single application procedure for its
Eiffel Scholarship and Eiffel Doctorate Scholarship programmes.

The new Eiffel programme thus covers two types of course:

Master’s postgraduate degree course
Ten-month co-tutored or co-managed component (preferably second or
third year) of PhD course

The objectives of the Eiffel excellence programme run by the French
Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs remain unchanged, the first
being to offer French higher-education opportunities for future
public- and private-sector decision-makers in three priority areas:
science; economics & management; and law & political science.

The program designed in cooperation with well-recognized
international research Partner institutions is entitled
“From simple molecules to nanostructured and bioactive materials”

It is divided into four thematic lines reflecting increasing
complexity of the studied materials:

Simple systems with complex molecular interactions,
Nanostructured materials and biomaterials,
From new materials to devices
and Biomacromolecules and therapeutic systems - modeling and
development.

Students from all countries are invited to apply. The Program aims to
train future scientists able to work in highly competitive
environment and with abilities to work across disciplines.
Duration of the program is 4 years, including 6-24 months spent
abroad in the foreign Partner institutions.

Up to 18 students will be admitted to the first or second year of the

International PhD studies. The successful candidates will be able to
choose a Principal Supervisor and select the subject of the project
(download subjects of theses).

A fellowship of 3000 PLN/month (tax-free) + 500 PLN/month (insurance)
is offered, which compares well with the average salary in Poland. An
additional allowance of 1500 PLN /month will be provided for the stay
at the foreign partner institution.

Tuition fees for all coursework and health insurance are covered by
the fellowship. The University will assist in finding accommodation.

The Monash Graduate Scholarship is available to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and international students. Award holders receive an annual stipend paid fortnightly and may also be eligible for allowances, such as an establishment allowance, a relocation allowance and thesis allowance. Approximately 100 awards are offered annually.

A PhD and MSc Studentship is available at the Centre for Hydrology, Micrometeorology and Climate Change, University College Cork, Ireland. Hydromet is an international, multidisciplinary and expanding research group, seeking to recruit a number of highly qualified people for full time research assistant positions at graduate and post-doctoral level. Current positions are open until filled.

(1) PhD Studentship

Topic : Greenhouse gas fluxes in peatland forests

Duration: 4 years
Value of Studentship: Approx. €20,000 per annum (plus fees). Tax-exempt.
Closing date: open until filled

The successful applicant will investigate the affect of afforestation on the greenhouse gas balance (GHG) in blanket peatlands. The study will be based on a chrono-sequence which will include a pristine blanket peatland and at least four forest sites spanning the full rotation. Soil fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O will be measured using chamber techniques. Litterfall and fine root turnover will also be studied.

(2) MSc Studentship

Topic: Predicting N2O emissions under altered management and climate scenarios

Availability: From January 2008.
Term: 18 months
Stipend: €18,000 p.a. (tax free), plus fees

Post description:

This post forms part of a collaborative project between UCC and the Cork Institute of Technology to estimate the emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) from managed agricultural grasslands in Ireland under current conditions and provide predictions of future emissions. A suitably qualified graduate is required to model regional agricultural nitrous oxide emissions under a set of future scenarios based on current and projected land use and management and climate trends in Ireland. A portfolio of five scenarios reflecting ongoing and possible future changes will be identified. These will include policy developments (e.g. set-aside, REPS, Water Framework Directive implementation, CAP single payment implementation, emissions trading), climate change (elevated atmospheric CO2, changing seasonal precipitation and temperature patterns).

Work description:

Use of stochastic weather generation to simulate daily weather patterns under a number of climate change and land management scenarios.
Run models (provided by project staff) under each scenario.
Collate, analyse and interpret the model results.

Requirements:

Degree in engineering.
Well developed numerical and data management skills.
Highly motivated and able to work as part of a team.
Ability to meet strict deadlines.
